Originally from London, Julian Baker undertook training in The Bowen Technique when he was living in Australia. He initially trained in reflexology but he sought out Bowen training after being impressed by very successful treatment for an acute neck injury. Returning to Britain in 1992, he initially ran a busy clinic but soon began teaching the technique full time in response to the tremendous demand for training. As a result of his devotion and boundless energy, he has been responsible for the rapid growth of the technique in the UK, traveling throughout the country teaching and promoting it.

Julian’s first career path was catering and he was involved in the regional apprenticeship and training scheme for eight years. As a result, his teaching is what has been termed by some as "lively and innovative". Julian uses ‘hands-on-hands’ teaching, demonstrations, analogies and case histories to pass on The Bowen Technique in a unique and animated way. Many people comment on the fact that as well as having learned an extremely valuable tool, they have had a course full of relaxed fun, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions and have points clarified. Julian is the most experienced Bowen Therapy Teacher in Europe and has used this experience to develop a comprehensive teacher training programme. Julian is married with two young children and his wife, Louise, has been the mastermind behind setting up and running the very efficient E.C.B.S. office. He has recently started to work with the subtleties of the technique, moving into an intuitive approach and addressing the role of the therapist in the process of treatment. Still a keen cook, Julian also plays golf and studies Buddhism.

Rosefield Clinic, 1 Rosefield Mews, 42 Rosefield Street, Leamington Spa, CV32 4HE

David grew up on his family’s farm in south Wales and initially established a career as an Agricultural Engineer and then went on to teach in Further Education. After many years he returned to studying at the Oxford College of Chiropractic and was awarded a D.C. David decided to train in the Bowen Technique to give a different dimension to his work. He soon found that the Bowen Technique was a complete modality and now uses it exclusively in his practice in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire.

Since late 1995 David has also worked with Julian Baker as his assistant on the E.C.B.S. Introductory Courses and has been leading one day workshops since November 1996. In his practice, he treats all types of conditions but, in particular many Rugby and Football players, Professional Golfers and other athletes. He says of the technique, \\\"It is particularly effective on acute injuries and problems, although chronic and long-standing complaints respond as well. It is a natural and holistic sports therapy.\\\" In teaching the technique, David likes the procedural approach to treating the whole body. As students gain experience, he guides them into using their senses to treat people. His students learn to be able to ‘read’ a person’s body and therefore ask the right questions when treating, noting the subtle changes that Bowen brings to the body. In his leisure time, David enthusiastically supports his teenage sons in their keen interest in Rugby football.

Address: 8 Palmerston Road, Earlsdon, Coventry, CV5 6FH

Joy was born and raised in Warwickshire. After her marriage, she and her late husband lived for several years in Australia before returning to her home town. Joy has always had a great interest in many aspects of health and healing, particularly nutrition, naturopathy and self development. She has also studied Tai Chi for seven years. She is qualified in holistic massage and ran a successful practice before experiencing Bowen with a student practitioner. The result was so dramatic that she undertook the E.C.B.S. training. The Bowen Technique incorporates many of the things she has learned over the years and believes in strongly. She says: \\\"It works with the whole person in a natural way which encourages/supports the body’s desire for homeostasis and health. Importantly, it encourages self-responsibility.\\\" A warm, open and gentle person, Joy’s teaching affirms and encourages students to recognise and develop their own abilities through the discipline of The Bowen Technique. She wants the teaching of Bowen to embrace as many people as possible, from those wishing to help family and friends to professional therapists requiring a training commensurate with today’s, and the future’s, standards.

Joy has two grown up sons and a young granddaughter and thoroughly enjoys the theatre, cinema, reading, walking, cooking and gardening as well as running a busy Bowen practice with her partner John.

Alastair was born, and spent his early childhood in Argentina where his father was headmaster of a British school. After university, he taught for a while and qualified as an FA coach. Despite working full-time, he fitted in time to be a part-time fireman where he learned First Aid. This eventually led to his taking up Bowen. Asked to coach his local football team, he also became the \\\"sponge man\\\". Realising he knew little about sports injuries, he trained, under the auspices of the Football Association, in physiotherapy.

He studied under Paddy Armour, Head of Pinderfields Physiotherapy Department and Fred Street of Arsenal and England, qualifying with the FA Treatment of Injury Certificate in 1972. He was appointed physiotherapist to two semi-professional football clubs where he remained for nearly ten years, gaining much valuable experience in the treatment of sports injuries. Alastair has had extensive experience in teaching both technical and practical subjects to adults. In his Practice, he deals with a wide range of cases. He also runs a weekly clinic at the Blenheim Project in London where many of his clients suffer from various forms of stress. He is also particularly interested in the work he is doing with asthma cases where he has achieved some remarkable results. His teaching style is relaxed and concentrates on getting pupils to feel confident in the work they undertake.

Heatherdale, 188 Waltham Road, Grimsby, Lincolnshire DN33 2PZ

Born in South Africa, Belinda has lived in the U.K. since the age of 9. Her educational years were spent in Surrey until attending Reading University where she gained her BSc Hons in Food Science. Belinda then moved to Lincolnshire where she worked in the food industry for ten years, during which time she developed an interest in complementary medicine. She initially trained as an aromatherapist then reflexologist , and it was whilst practising and teaching locally that she discovered the Bowen Technique and recognised this to be a far more effective therapy than her current techniques. She was further impressed by this gentle technique when it helped her long standing neck condition. Bowen now forms 95% of her practise and she is grateful that such a simple technique can give such outstanding results with such minimal input by the practitioner compared with most other hands-on therapies. She says: \\\" I love Bowen for it\\\'s simplicity and am continually amazed by the powerful beneficial effects that it can have on people in so many different ways.\\\"

Belinda is sincere, unassuming and approachable and it is with great enthusiasm that she encourages and inspires her students. She is confident that in the future the Bowen Technique will become as popular as reflexology and as respected as physiotherapy. She believes that by teaching this method she will contribute to the understanding and acceptance of it by both the professional and non-professional alike. Belinda is married with one young daughter. She has traveled extensively and enjoys camping, gardening and family life.

Lynndale, Old Ryton Village, Ryton, Tyne & Wear NE40 3QQ

Paula Esson studied Sport Science at Northumbria University specialising in exercise physiology and sports performance and has coached at a National level for England Basketball. As head of sport science for Gateshead College the effects of sports injuries on players and students formed a main focus of attention in terms of treatment and prevention. It was personal injury to a shoulder that brought Paula to the Bowen Technique. Intrigued by the marked changes in pain, function and well-being, developed enough conviction to train as a practitioner.

Qualifying in April 1999, the demand for the technique from sports performers and the general public soon saw a change in career. Paula co-ordinates a very busy clinic in Durham, with two associates receiving client referrals directly from physiotherapists and GPs. A keen link to sports performance still exists with a personal desire to take the Bowen Technique into the Professional Sports arena as the primary care for injury prevention and treatment. As an experienced coach, teacher and therapist, Paula believes that bringing balance to the individual, physically, emotionally and spiritually contributes to health and ultimately well-being and feels The Bowen Technique provides the trigger to achieve this in a natural and non-intrusive format. When Paula is not working she enjoys bringing up her young son, basketball, volleyball and squash are keen active hobbies with music, films and books to relax by.

Misty View, Crosshands, Coreley, Ludlow, Shropshire SY8 3AR

Sylvia was born in mid-Wales and educated at Llandrindod Wells Comprehensive School. Upon leaving school, she attended Radnor College of Further Education, studying a pre-nursing course. Upon completion of this, she commenced her state enrolled nurse training at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. After completion of training, she returned to mid-Wales and nursed in the community hospital. In 1982, she marred Kevin and moved to Worcester and continued nursing the elderly in a Residential Nursing Home. During the next few years her two children were born so she worked part time nights at a residential home in south Shropshire where the family had made their home. It was due to an injury in her early nursing career, followed by the birth of her children, that exacerbated a lower back condition.

Having spent numerous months in hospital on bed rest, her prospects of returning to nursing were failing fast. It was at this time she was introduced to reflexology which had remarkable effects and gave her the encouragement to learn the therapy. This really started her career in complementary practice. She then trained in the following: remedial massage, aromatherapy, Indian head massage, allergy testing and reiki. It was in 1994 that Bowen entered her life when her old injury reoccurred and she found the treatment enlightening and beneficial to body and mind. In 1992 she commenced teaching reflexology on a Sports Therapy course at a college in mid-Wales and over the years she has taught holistic therapy to numerous students. During the week she runs a clinic for private clients with wide ranging problems in her local village and one day a week in a market town in Herefordshire.

26a Fore Street , Salcombe, Devon, TQ8 8ET

Jihan began her teaching career in London as a riding instructor to both able bodied and severely disabled people. She also competed in equestrian events for a number of years, travelling extensively throughout Europe. After receiving treatments in 1996, she realised that longstanding childhood conditions which had previously been diagnosed as chronic and unchangeable were resolving.

She subsequently trained in Bowen and found that teaching the technique was a natural progression. Her vitality, combined with her compassionate approach to teaching enables students to draw on and build upon their existing skills and knowledge. Under Jiahn\'s course leadership, students can enjoy a relaxed and fun learning environment. She lives in South Devon where she practices Bowen and also runs a very busy multi-disciplinary clinic. Jihan\'s interests lie both in the physical well being of people and the tangible link to the mental/emotional well being, making her approach to therapeutic body work and her clinical practice a truly holistic and integrative one.

15 Frederick Road, Malvern, Worcestershire, WR14 1RS

Jo has worked in stage management in the West End and in Scotland, in marketing and PR and as a gym instructor. When a back injury forced her to re evaluate her life she initially trained in reflexology and sports massage and then as a Bowen practitioner following remarkably successful Bowen treatment for her chronic back problem. By this point Jo had been head hunted to open a fitness club but decided to open her own clinic enabling her to develop a more holistic approach to treating people. She now runs a well-established Worcestershire clinic and treats clients with many different conditions from across the UK and continues to undertake related training both in the UK and overseas; most recently in South Africa at the Capetown University Medical School.

The results that Jo sees in her clients confirm her belief that Bowen is an accessible and efficient treatment. With the ever-increasing presence that the Bowen Technique has in our healthcare system Jo is confident that it will soon receive the full acknowledgement it deserves and by teaching others she is contributing to the growth of this valuable, non-invasive therapy. In the past Jo has taught literacy skills on a one to one basis so when the offer arose for her to teach the Bowen Technique, she welcomed the opportunity. Her courses take a friendly, hands-on, practical approach and her experience enables her to fully support a range of student learning styles. Jo’s clear enthusiasm for Bowen and her down to earth philosophy gives students plenty of opportunity to ask questions as well as supporting them as they develop confidence in their work.
